What We Do

We are dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Below are examples of chapter activities listed in these three main areas.

Promoting Patriotism

  • Observe Veterans Day and support the local American Legion Veterans Memorial
  • Support Wreaths Across America and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony
  • Commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the House in the Horseshoe
  • Sponsor community service awards in foster care projects, women’s shelters, the food bank, and programs for English as a second language and Native Americans in Moore County

Our chapter recognizes local veterans for their service.

Historic Preservation

  • Recognition of local historic markers indicating routes of immigrants, military troops, and buffalo migration through our area
  • Support our National Society for the preservation of NSDAR buildings
  • Participate in local historic programs including at the House at the Horseshoe, in conjunction with the Sons of the American Revolution
  • Volunteer in transcribing records of Patriots to be cataloged in DAR genealogical databases

Our chapter was honored with a plaque at the historic House in the Horseshoe for our support in its restoration.

Education

  • Commemorate Constitution Week with a local radio show and programs in elementary schools with members dressed in colonial costumes
  • Participate in “Bells Across America” on September 17 to honor the signing of the U. S. Constitution
  • Sponsor DAR American History Essay Contests for students in fifth to eighth grades
  • Recognize and highlight local teachers of American history
  • Sponsor Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) Awards to cadets in high schools
  • Sponsor local high school seniors in the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest
  • Support Crossnore Communities for Children with supplies and proceeds from fundraisers

We presented an award and medal to the 2023 winner of our DAR Good Citizens Award.
